Ingredients

Guinness Chocolate Cake:
  • 1 cup Guinness stout
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.75 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 0.75 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Irish Buttercream:
  • 1 cup unsalted Irish butter, softened
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3-4 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Pinch salt

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Combine Guinness and butter in a saucepan. Heat until butter is melted, then whisk in cocoa powder.
  3. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Add the Guinness mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Whisk together eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
  6. Add the wet ingredients to the batter and mix until smooth.
  7. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  8. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Beat the softened Irish butter until light and fluffy.
  10. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating well after each addition.
  11. Add the heavy cream until the buttercream reaches your desired consistency.
  12. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  13. Once the cake is completely cooled, frost with the Irish buttercream.
  14. Decorate as desired.
